Ranking Members Thompson, Magaziner Release Statement on White Supremacist Terrorgram Collective Indictment
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-RI), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement & Intelligence released the below joint statement on the Department of Justice announcing indictments of U.S. citizen white supremacists who led the Terrorgram Collective, which has been used to incite violence, solicit hate crimes, and promote terrorism.
“We commend the Department of Justice for its critical counterterrorism work in these arrests. It is clear that as we aim to stop the proliferation of terrorism on foreign, cloud-based messaging apps, we must remain focused on domestic racially motivated extremist groups, in addition to Foreign Terrorist Organizations. Notably, this indictment shows that the leadership of the Terrorgram Collective, a white supremacist Telegram network that promotes terrorism and incited terrorist attacks, was based in the United States.
“The American people will find it shocking that two citizens could freely operate an international terror network from their homes in the U.S. for years. With a critical election in less than two months and the Terrorgram Collective clearly targeting our critical infrastructure and government officials, we must remain vigilant and focus on this threat. We hope the Committee on Homeland Security convenes a hearing on U.S.-based white supremacist terrorism threats soon as possible.”
